Προτού αρχίσω να γράφω, διάβαζα πολύ, διάβαζα ότι έπεφτε στα χέρια μου. Αγαπούσα τη λογοτεχνία. Την ποίηση δεν την καταλάβαινα, τη θεωρούσα ένα ‘πεδίο’, κάπως δύσκολο να το διαβώ. Το 1999 επισκέφθηκα για πρώτη φορά την Ινδία. Αυτό επαναλήφθηκε και στα επόμενα τρία χρόνια. Άρχισα τότε να ξεψαχνίζω τις χιλιάδες μέρες και τις στιγμές της ζωής μου. Άρχισα να αναλύω τα πράγματα, να βρω το νόημα της ύπαρξης… και κάπου εκεί, σ’ ένα μονόδρομο μονοπάτι, in a pivotal moment, συνάντησα την ποίηση. Είναι αυτό που λέμε πως όλα συνωμότησαν για να τη συναντήσω και να την αγαπήσω.
Γράφω για να καταλάβω την αλήθεια των πραγμάτων και γιατί με κεντρίζει η ύφανση των λέξεων στον ιστό ενός ποιήματος. Γράφω γι αυτά που αγγίζω και γεύομαι, γι’ αυτά που βλέπω, που ακούω, γι’ αυτά που ζω και ονειρεύομαι.
Before I start writing, I read a lot; I read everything that fell into my hands. I loved literature but I couldn’t easily understand poetry. I considered poetry ‘a field’, that it was very difficult to ‘drive through’. In 1999 I visited India for the first time. I went back again every year for the next three years. I then began to go through the thousand days and moments of my life. I started to analyze things, to find the meaning of existence … and somewhere there, at a one-way path, at a pivotal moment, I came across poetry. Things fell into place, as we say, everything conspired so that I meet poetry and fall in love with it.
I write in order to figure out the truth about things and because I am intrigued by the weaving of the words in the web of a poem. I write for that I touch and savor, that I see, that I hear, that I live and dream about.

Θα έλεγα πως πάντοτε η ποίηση, ακόμη και ερωτική, έχει, στο βάθος των λέξεων πολιτική χροιά, και στα δικά μου ποιήματα υποβόσκει το πολιτικό πρόβλημα που αντιμετωπίζει σήμερα η Κύπρος. Τα βιώματά μου, από τον καιρό που γεννήθηκα έχουν να κάνουν με πολιτικές αναταραχές με κατακλείδα την Τουρκική εισβολή το 1974 που μοίρασε τον τόπο μου στα δυο. Μιλώντας για αγάπη και για έρωτα είναι ένας τρόπος να αντιμετωπίσω την υφιστάμενη κατάσταση. Είμαι και εκ φύσεως ερωτική! Και ίσως γι’ αυτό οδηγώ τη γραφή μου σ’ αυτά τα μονοπάτια.
I would say that poetry, always has, even when erotic, a political tinge, and in my own poems the political problem that Cyprus is living through, smolders underneath. My experiences from the time that I was born have to do with civil unrest culminating with the 1974 Turkish invasion that divided my country in two. Speaking of love and for love is my way of addressing positively the current situation. I’m by nature erotic! And maybe that’s why I move my writing down these paths

Τα πρώτα μου αναγνωστικά βήματα ήταν στην ποίησή του Μίλτου Σαχτούρη, γιατί ένας καλός μου φίλος ποιητής ο Λίνος Ιωαννίδης μου χάρισε μια ποιητική συλλογή του, έτσι αναπάντεχα, με την αφιέρωση «για το κόκκινο μαρτύριο της ποίησης…». Την διάβασα και στη συνέχεια αγόρασα όλες τις συλλογές του Σαχτούρη. Μέσα από την απλότητα των στίχων του μπόρεσα να δω πολλά και να καταλάβω ακόμη περισσότερα. Λέω απλότητα των στίχων του, όμως να ξεκαθαρίσω πως το βάθος τους είναι απύθμενο… και κάπου εκεί στο βάθος βρήκα μια ρίζα νερού και τη γεύτηκα… Είναι ανάμεσα στους αγαπημένους μου, όπως και ο Αργεντινός ποιητής Χόρχε Λουίς Μπόρχες.
My first reading steps were on Miltos Sachtouris poetry, when a good friend of mine, the poet Linos Ioannidis, gave me a poetry collection, just like that, out of the blue, with the dedication „for the red torment of poetry …“. I read it and then I bought all of Sachtouris’ collections. Through the simplicity of his lyrics I was able to see a lot and understand even more. I say, simplicity of his lyrics, but do not misunderstand, their depth is bottomless, and somewhere in that depth I found a root of water and tasted it. He is one of my favorite poets, together with the Argentinian Jorge Luis Borges.

With Ideogramma, a nonprofit cultural organization, that we established with my partner Nora Hadjisotiriou, we organise international Literary and Poetry festivals in Cyprus since 2006 and in 2017 we launched the International Poetry Slam Cyprus. Also in collaboration with European Countries/Organizations, we promote the literature of our countries, all over Europe.
